Race your pawns around the board, dodge blockades, and be the first player to bring every pawn home to the center. This version keeps the game easy to pick up, but it still has plenty of deliciously annoying moments.
How To Win
Get all 4 of your pawns to your center triangle before everyone else.
Quick Start haha
You play with 4 pawns.
In this implementation, 1 pawn starts already on your colored starting square.
The other 3 begin off the board and must be summoned with a roll of 6.
Movement Rules
On your turn, roll the die and move 1 pawn exactly that many spaces.
If you roll a 6, you may either move a pawn already on the board or summon a new pawn from off the board onto your starting square.
Rolling a 6 gives you another turn.
If you roll 3 sixes in a row, your turn ends with a pass.
If you have no legal move, your turn also passes.
Capturing And Safety
If you land on a single opponent pawn on a normal shared square, you capture it and send it back off the board.
Safe squares are the marked star squares plus all home-row squares.
A single opponent pawn on a safe square blocks landing on that square, but you may still pass over it.
Two or more opponent pawns stacked on the same shared square form a blockade.
A blockade blocks both landing and passing.
Your own pawns can stack together.
Summoning With A 6
Your own pawns on your starting square do not block summoning. You can stack there.
If a single enemy pawn is sitting on your starting square, a summon with a 6 captures it.
If 2 or more enemy pawns are stacked on your starting square, you cannot summon onto it.
Home Stretch
After a full lap, your pawn enters its own colored home row.
Home-row squares are safe.
You must roll the exact number needed to reach the final center triangle.
If the roll would overshoot the center, that pawn cannot move.
Good To Know
This Ludo version is fast, mean, and swingy in the best way: safe squares matter, blockades are nasty, and a well-timed 6 can completely flip the race.
Ludo is one of the great classic race games: simple enough to learn in minutes, but chaotic enough to create instant drama. One lucky roll can save you, ruin someone else, or turn the whole board upside down.
A Short History
Ludo is the modern descendant of Pachisi, a much older Indian race game that dates back centuries. Pachisi was traditionally played on a cross-shaped board, and its core idea was already there: race pieces around a track and bring them safely home.
In the late 19th century, the game was adapted into the version now widely known as Ludo. Since then it has spread all over the world and inspired many close relatives, including Parcheesi and several regional house-rule versions.
Part of the charm of Ludo is that every family, schoolyard, and friend group seems to have its own tiny twists. This version follows the rules used in this implementation, including safe-square behavior, blockades, and special summon captures on your own starting square.
