Dots and Boxes is the classic pencil-and-paper game you probably doodled through math class as a kid. Two players take turns drawing a single line between two neighbouring dots - simple to learn, sneaky-fun to master.
On your turn, draw any open line between two neighbouring dots. Straight lines only - no diagonals allowed (nice try).
Finish the fourth side of a box and it's yours! Mark it as your own, score a point, and immediately go again.
One well-placed line can close two boxes at once. Both of them count, and you still get another turn - savour the moment.
If your line doesn't complete a box, your turn is over and it's the other player's move.
The game ends when every possible line has been drawn. Whoever has claimed the most boxes wins!
Play against Tom, pass the device for a two-player match, pick a bigger board when you're feeling brave, or jump into Multiplayer to challenge someone online.
Remember doodling this in your notebook during a slow afternoon at school? Two kids, one page of graph paper, a pen each - and suddenly a boring math class turned into a tense little duel. Dots and Boxes has been quietly stealing time from students for well over a century, and honestly, it still holds up.
It looks harmless: just draw a line, close a box, take a point. But after a few games you'll start noticing the traps - those long chains where whoever is forced to open them ends up handing over half the board. That's when Dots and Boxes stops being a doodle and starts being a real little strategy game. The good news? You can pick it up in about thirty seconds. The bad news? Tom already has.
This online version keeps the pencil-and-paper feel - no complicated setup, no rules to memorise, just click a line between two dots and off you go. Play a quick round against Tom on your break, hand your phone to a friend for a proper two-player showdown, or scale up to a 6 x 6 board when you're ready for something meatier. All that's missing is the squeaky classroom chair.
