Batalla Naval (que también puede conocerse con el nombre de Hundir la Flota) es originalmente un juego simple de papel y lápiz. Juegas contra un oponente, ambos tienen una hoja de papel con dos cuadrículas de 10x10, una cuadrícula para tus propios barcos y otra para los barcos de tu oponente que estás tratando de encontrar. Comienzas organizando tus barcos en tu cuadrícula. Los barcos que tienes son:

Los barcos no pueden estar uno al lado del otro en la cuadrícula, ni siquiera en diagonal, siempre debe haber al menos un cuadrado entre los barcos. Aparte de eso, puedes organizarlos como quieras. Puedes optar por la colocación aleatoria predeterminada, hacer clic en el botón "Aleatorio" para obtener una colocación aleatoria diferente, o puedes arrastrar los barcos y hacer clic en ellos para girarlos y obtener una configuración completamente personalizada.
Sé que muchas versiones del juego permiten que los barcos estén uno al lado del otro, pero eso no está permitido aquí. Creo que hace el juego mucho más interesante si no se permite, ya que obtener un barco grande te da una ventaja mayor.
Los jugadores luego se turnan anunciando un disparo en la cuadrícula, por ejemplo, un jugador dirá "E5" y su oponente dirá "impacto" si acertaron algo en E5 o "fallaste" si fallaron. Si tocas un barco, puedes disparar de nuevo. Marca qué cuadrados son aciertos y cuáles son fallos e intenta ser el primero en hundir todos los barcos de tu oponente. El primer jugador en hundir los barcos de su oponente gana el juego.
Hay muchas variaciones del juego con diferentes barcos y nombres diferentes (Hundir la Flota, Broadsides), pero hemos elegido la versión que solía jugar en Islandia. Y el nombre "Batalla Naval" es una traducción directa de cómo se llama el juego en islandés ("Sjóorrusta").
