Gomoku, auch Fünf in einer Reihe genannt, ist ein abstraktes Strategiespiel. Es wird traditionell mit Go-Steinen (schwarze und weiße Steine) auf einem 15×15-Go-Brett gespielt, während früher ein 19×19-Brett üblich war. Da die Steine normalerweise nicht bewegt oder vom Brett entfernt werden, kann Gomoku auch als Papier-und-Bleistift-Spiel gespielt werden. Das Spiel ist in verschiedenen Ländern unter unterschiedlichen Namen bekannt.
Die Spieler setzen abwechselnd einen Stein ihrer Farbe auf einen freien Schnittpunkt. Schwarz beginnt. Gewinner ist der erste Spieler, der eine ununterbrochene Reihe von fünf Steinen seiner Farbe horizontal, vertikal oder diagonal bildet.
Nach manchen Regeln muss diese Reihe genau fünf Steine lang sein; sechs oder mehr Steine in einer Reihe gelten nicht als Sieg und werden als Überlinie bezeichnet. Wenn das Brett vollständig gefüllt ist und niemand eine Reihe von fünf Steinen gebildet hat, endet das Spiel unentschieden.
Die grundlegendste Form von Gomoku wird Freestyle-Gomoku genannt. In dieser Variante gibt es keine Einschränkungen bei den Zügen. Der erste Spieler (Schwarz) hat einen erheblichen Vorteil, weshalb verschiedene Regeländerungen vorgeschlagen wurden, um das Spiel auszugleichen.
Renju ist eine professionelle Variante von Gomoku, die zusätzliche Regeln einführt, um das Spiel auszugleichen. Bei Renju darf Schwarz kein Doppel-Drei, Doppel-Vier oder eine Überlinie setzen.
Ein Doppel-Drei ist ein Zug, der gleichzeitig zwei getrennte Reihen von drei Steinen (offene Dreier) erzeugt. Ein Doppel-Vier ist ein Zug, der gleichzeitig zwei getrennte Reihen von vier Steinen (offene Vierer) erzeugt. Eine Überlinie ist eine Reihe von sechs oder mehr Steinen.
Wenn Schwarz einen dieser verbotenen Züge macht, verliert Schwarz das Spiel. Diese Einschränkungen können in den Spieloptionen aktiviert werden.
Historische Aufzeichnungen deuten darauf hin, dass die Ursprünge von Gomoku bis Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts in der Edo-Zeit zurückverfolgt werden können. Es heißt, dass Kuwanaya Buemon der 10. Generation, ein Kaufmann, der die Nijō-Familie frequentierte, in diesem Spiel sehr geschickt war, woraufhin es sich unter der Bevölkerung verbreitete. Der Name 'gomoku' stammt aus dem Japanischen, wo es gomokunarabe (五目並べ) genannt wird. 'Go' bedeutet fünf, 'moku' ist ein Zählwort für Spielsteine und 'narabe' bedeutet Reihenbildung. Das Spiel ist in China beliebt, wo es Wuziqi (五子棋) genannt wird. 'Wu' (五 wǔ) bedeutet fünf, 'zi' (子 zǐ) bedeutet Stein, und 'qi' (棋 qí) bezeichnet in Chinesisch eine Kategorie von Brettspielen. Das Spiel ist auch in Korea populär, wo es omok (오목 [五目]) genannt wird und denselben Aufbau und Ursprung wie der japanische Name hat.
Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde das Spiel nach Großbritannien eingeführt, wo es als Go Bang bekannt war, was angeblich eine Verfälschung des japanischen Wortes goban ist, das selbst vom chinesischen k'i pan (qí pán) 'Go-Brett' abgeleitet wurde. Das Spiel gewann etwas an Popularität, und in den 1920er Jahren wurde es kommerziell von Firmen wie The Chad Valley Co Ltd in einer modifizierten Version unter dem Namen 'Spoil Five' vertrieben.
